Berlin architects Sauerbruch Hutton were thus faced with an exciting challenge when asked to design the Museum Brandhorst in Munich. Three different seating solutions were developed for the museum, which opened in 2009 – for the cafeteria, the foyer, the conference and lecture rooms as well as the lounge. ClassiCon developed the designs to the point of series production in close collaboration with the architects. Along with demanding expectations in terms of form and quality, the typical wear and tear that the furniture would be subjected to in the public space had also to be taken into consideration. Its durability was ensured by means of various tests. Frame of solid wood, clearly varnished or black-stained. Frame of steel tubing with rubber webbing. Straw Lounge is a lounge chair constructed entirely of steel. What makes Straw and Straw Lounge unique is the way in which the tubular steel has been deformed. Instead of forming the frame in gentle bends, Osko + Deichmann have folded the steel tubes. Folds and kinks are the most obvious way to deform a tube, but the contrast with the otherwise rounded shape of the tube produces a result that seems almost to have been fashioned by hand. Bent tubular steel has stood as a symbol for modernity in furnishings ever since the innovative designs of Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer in the 1920s. Their brief was to base this product on the language of design that characterised Blå Station in its earliest days – the round birch-wood ring and natural tanned leather from Tärnsjö Tannery. The result, B25, also builds on the idea of furnishings as members of a family. The allusions to Börge Lindau’s Oblado series are unmistakable. We first manufactured the iconic round ring in birch in 1986 – and the very same tool has now been used for B25. The B25 family also includes an easy chair and an ottoman. Ibbi is a lounge chair with a lot of character and is a beautiful example of what opportunities wood presents. The chair is made of birch and has two main parts, the ends and the laths. The ends are two reversed copies of each other and the laths create the seat and back. The chair has a soft form that encompasses the body so that it feels encompassing, safe and inviting. A neck cushion/back support and seat cushion are available as additional options. On the back of the chair you can see the soft roundness extra clearly, making Ibbi equally beautiful from all directions. The corners, which stick up cheekily from the back, are decorative and practical for hanging things on. The handles on the front edge are useful when you have to get up. Dundra is a seating series comprising chair, easy-chair and bar stool. Dundra is constructed around a chromed steel frame with moulded seats that are then upholstered. The covered button that is one of the hallmarks of this family of furnishings helps ensure that the backrest retains its intended shape. Dundra easy-chair is a great choice in, for example, lobbies, waiting rooms and lounges. Stefan Borselius has designed the Dundra seating series – chair, easy-chair and bar stool. The gently rounded lines clearly show the series’ close kinship with Dunder sofa. The brief called for a design that built on the thinking behind Dunder sofa to create a family of products comprising sofa, chair, easy-chair and bar stool. Ever since Blå Station was founded in 1986, one of the company’s basic ideas has been to create families of furnishings, using the same concept and components to produce different items of furniture.
